This item contains a unique collection of the official records of hundreds of criminal and civil cases that took place in the earliest years of the history of the Territory of Montana from 1882-1886. Designated “Minute Book No. 10” the book contains the proceedings of the First District Court of the Territory of Montana. It covers the dates from November 13, 1882 - April 11, 1886. The entries in the book are almost entirely in the hand of Theophilus Muffly - (1833 - 1898), a pioneer of the Territory who emigrated to Virginia City in December of 1864 and who was appointed to the bar by the United States Supreme Court. This unique item is an opportunity to supplement the Law Library’s Trials collections with original documents related to Montana territorial cases.
