Brigham Young Signature on a Draft of a Utah Statute, 1851

The Law Library maintains a small but interesting collection of handwritten legal documents produced by noteworthy Americans in the course of their careers. On offer here is an item that would be a fascinating addition to that collection: a manuscript draft of a statute that was subsequently recorded in the Acts Resolutions and Memorials Passed by the First Annual and Special Sessions of the Legislative Assembly, of the Territory of Utah, 1852. A very rare document, autographed by Young who was the second prophet of the Mormon church and three other important early Mormon figures: Phelps, who was an early elder of the church and printer of early church works including the Evening and Morning Star; Richards, who was an apostle ordained by Young in 1840; and Carrington, later an apostle and assistant counselor to Young. A remarkable piece of early legal Americana relating to a central figure of one of the United States’ major religious movements.
